Tactical science: German hockey as a methodology
— CULTGerman hockey rests on two pillars that structurally distinguish the country. The first is Raumdeckung, zonal defending, which has been the tactical foundation since the 1990s. Strongly influenced by Arrigo Sacchi's theories, Germany works with four crucial reference points on the pitch: the ball, the space, the opponent and one's own teammates. The team operates as a collective unit that keeps the distances between players constant, forcing opponents into tight spaces and into mistakes.
The second pillar is the Bundesliga, a club competition that functions as the structural backbone of the national teams. Clubs like Mannheimer HC and Rot-Weiss Köln offer facilities approaching professional standards, with video analysis and specialised goalkeeper and penalty-corner training. The Final Four, where the title is decided, is a weekly test of tactical maturity. Programmes like Power Play 26 prioritise individual skills training over team tactics at a young age, with the aim of a sustainable supply of technically gifted players.
What further sets Germany apart is the dual-career culture. Unlike many other top countries, German players often combine their sporting careers with demanding university studies or professional careers. Head coach Janneke Schopman, in charge since November 2024, identifies this as a source of enormous discipline and planning. She combines this German work ethic with international experience from the Netherlands, the United States and India. Die Danas won Olympic gold in Athens 2004 and have been part of Europe's top four for years.

ranked 7 FIHDie Danas are led by Janneke Schopman, the Dutch coach who took over from Valentin Altenburg in November 2024. With bronze at the 2023 European Championship, silver in the FIH Pro League 2023-24 and the 2025 European final against the Netherlands, Germany sits stably among the European top. Co-captains Linnea Weidemann and Lisa Nolte lead a squad in transition, after the departure of seven experienced players following Paris 2024.
What sets Germany apart is the combination of Raumdeckung (zonal defending as a tactical foundation) and the dual-career discipline of players who combine top sport with demanding studies. The Bundesliga forms the structural backbone, with Mannheimer HC and Rot-Weiss Köln as dominant clubs. Sonja Zimmermann is the cornerstone of the defence and the primary penalty-corner specialist.
