The Speedy Tigers between Sultan Azlan Shah and LA 2028

— CULT

Malaysian hockey is supported by a combination you will not find in any other Asian country: royal patronage, a national competition with six corporate teams and an international invitation tournament that has provided a fixed stage for the world's top since 1983. The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) coordinates the programme from Kuala Lumpur, with Bukit Jalil as the national training centre and the TNB Malaysia Hockey League as the domestic peak. The competition revolves around the rivalry between TNB ThunderStars - rebranded in April 2026 and reinforced with sixteen internationals - and treble-winner Terengganu Hockey Team. UniKL, Maybank and feeder side TNB Thunderbolts also play their part in talent development.

What systemically sets Malaysia apart is the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, held annually at the Azlan Shah Stadium in Ipoh since 1983. No other country in the world invites the absolute hockey top for a tournament on its own soil every year. The ninth Yang di-Pertuan Agong, an avid hockey promoter, gave the tournament his name and his successors the patronage. For the national team this is a developmental hub where other sub-top countries can only gain experience against Australia, the Netherlands or Germany via long overseas trips. Malaysia took the title only in 2022, after almost forty years of waiting at home.

Under head coach Brendon Carolan, appointed on 1 April 2026 as Sarjit Singh's successor, the federation is breaking with the ad-hoc nature of recent seasons. The South African - previously assistant in the Malaysian staff and with the Irish men's team under Paul Revington - is introducing zonal defensive elements to reduce physical fatigue in the final quarter. The fall in the FIH ranking from ninth in 2023 to fifteenth in 2026 is the trigger for the change. The Junior World Cup squad of 2025 produced a new generation: Andywalfian Jeffrynus, Adam Asyraf and Danish Aiman made the step to the senior squad before Ismailia and are intended as the core of the cycle towards LA 2028. For the 2026 World Cup, Malaysia sits in Pool B in Wavre with Belgium, Germany and France. The tournament is for Carolan and the federation explicitly a test phase. The real top priority follows in October: the Asian Games, with direct Olympic qualification for LA 2028 at stake.

In March 2026, on a parched pitch in Egyptian Ismailia, Malaysia missed the last direct World Cup ticket by a whisker: a 5-4 defeat by Japan, and only via the world rankings did they reach Wavre after all. It is precisely the bind the Speedy Tigers have been in for a quarter of a century, since Sydney 2000 was their last Games. Speed aplenty, but the finishing, the defence and the governance keep faltering.

Half a century after the storied fourth place on home soil in 1975, a team with a new South African head coach, a fresh generation from the Junior World Cup and two sharpshooters travels to Pool B, where Belgium, defending champions Germany and France await. Read in the full dossier why this is the toughest draw of the tournament, and why Malaysia is still worth watching.
