The Catalan school: indoor and field in Spanish hockey
— CULTSpanish hockey revolves around two geographical poles: Catalonia and Madrid. The Real Federación Española de Hockey (RFEH) coordinates a national structure in which traditional top clubs like Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, Atlètic Terrassa and Real Sociedad of San Sebastián have competed against each other for generations in the División de Honor. The Catalan region around Barcelona and Terrassa is historically the heart of Spanish top hockey, with talent development going back to the 1940s.
What systemically sets Spain apart is the symbiosis between field and indoor hockey. Many top players combine both disciplines well into their careers, resulting in exceptionally high stick skills, quick decision-making in tight spaces and an above-average first touch. This cultural feature is directly visible on the pitch in the way Spanish players create space: with the small detail movements of an indoor player rather than the broad fanning runs typical elsewhere.
Las Redsticks reached the World Cup final in Terrassa 2022 against the Netherlands and took silver — the best result ever for the Spanish women's team. At the 2025 European Championship in Mönchengladbach they again reached the semi-finals. This line of structural top-six results forms the foundation on which the squad is building towards the 2026 World Cup, with a selection seeking balance between the experienced generation from Rosario 2022 and a wave of young talent from the División de Honor.

More about Spain
— LAYERSNational women's team
ranked 5 FIHLas Redsticks reached the 2022 World Cup final in Terrassa, a milestone that confirmed Spain as a fully fledged top hockey nation. The team is characterised by high technical skill — a product of the Spanish indoor-field symbiosis — and tactical discipline that traces back to the Catalan school. Goalkeeper Clara Pérez, captain Lucía Jiménez and forward Constanza Amundson form the axis of the current squad.
What sets Spain apart is the ability to survive in tight spaces and accelerate suddenly. The rivalry with the Netherlands is etched into collective memory through that final in Terrassa. At the 2026 World Cup Spain plays in Pool C in Wavre, together with co-host Belgium, New Zealand and Ireland — a group where every point matters in reaching the knockout phase.
