Black Sticks and the athletic tradition of New Zealand hockey

— CULT

New Zealand hockey operates in the shadow of rugby and cricket, but the Black Sticks have carved out a permanent place in the global top ten. Hockey New Zealand coordinates a competition structure of which the Premier Hockey League is the national pinnacle, supplemented by strong regional programmes in Auckland, Midlands, Central and Canterbury. The country has relatively few players compared to the Netherlands or Germany, but the concentration of talent in a handful of hubs compensates.

What sets New Zealand apart is the cross-sport culture: many top players come from athletic multi-sport backgrounds, resulting in physical players with above-average athletic foundations. The national training is concentrated in North Harbour, where central focus and intimacy meet. Many internationals play during their careers in the Dutch Hoofdklasse or the Australian Hockey One to develop their level further, giving New Zealand an extension of international experience.

The Black Sticks reached their highest global ranking in the 2010s under Mark Hager, but have gone through a period of transition since the Rio cycle. The team qualified for the 2026 World Cup via the 2025 Oceania Cup, in which they pushed favourites Australia to the limit. Under the current coaching staff, the emphasis is on consistency, physical coverage and a more pragmatic approach to major tournaments.

National women's team

ranked 10 FIH

The Black Sticks build towards the 2026 World Cup with a squad based on physical capacity, discipline and a realistic tactical approach. Names like captain Olivia Merry and Rose Tynan in midfield form the backbone, with a wave of young players from the Premier Hockey League making their World Cup debut.

What sets New Zealand apart is the mix of athletic versatility and hockey-specific tactics, complemented by the international experience of players in the Hoofdklasse or Hockey One. At the 2026 World Cup NZ sits in Pool C in Wavre against co-host Belgium, Spain and Ireland — a group in which a fourth place is probably the maximum, but a crossover spot in the second phase is certainly not ruled out.
