University and amateur: Scottish hockey back at the World Cup
— CULTScottish hockey carries a tradition that goes back to the late nineteenth century, sustained by a dense university network. Scottish Hockey coordinates the national team, the leagues and a youth structure in which universities like Edinburgh, St Andrews and Durham serve as central training hubs for the national talent. Clubs like Grange, Dundee Wanderers, Western Wildcats and Clydesdale Western form the top of Scottish club hockey.
What systemically sets Scotland apart is an amateur model that operates within a professional hockey environment. Many players combine university studies with their sport, putting Scotland closer to the Irish or traditionally German dual-career model than to the full-time residencies of England, the Netherlands or the United States. Some top players reach elite training hours via the GB Hockey route, creating a constant political dynamic between Scottish Hockey and the overarching British structure.
Qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Hyderabad, where Scotland won bronze, was the first World Cup ticket in 24 years. Captain Sarah Robertson said afterwards that she could not yet grasp the historical significance, and that sentiment is characteristic of the Scottish hockey moment. Under head coach Chris Duncan, the team is building a philosophy he calls "person at the core", with penalty-corner specialist Amy Costello as one of the most reliable drag flickers of the tournament and a pipeline of young talent from the 2025 Junior World Cup squad.

More about Scotland
— LAYERSNational women's team
ranked 14 FIHThe Scottish women's team returns to the World Cup after 24 years' absence — an achievement seen in Scotland itself as a historic turning point. Under head coach Chris Duncan, the team plays with Sarah Robertson as tactical leader in midfield and Amy Costello as penalty-corner specialist. A wave of new names from the 2025 Junior World Cup, including Roxburgh, Harris and Wadsworth, refreshes the squad.
What sets Scotland apart is the amateur model within university hubs that nevertheless competes globally. Qualification was achieved at the very last moment, which makes the campaign extra emotionally charged. At the 2026 World Cup Scotland sits in Pool B in Wavre against Argentina, Germany and the United States. Stealing a point from Germany would be a victory in itself.
